Weapons of mass disruption

The Internet viruses or malicious software known as malware is causing increased threads to Internet users. Hundreds of thousands of them bombard personal computers every day. Far from being a mere nuisance, these bugs threaten modern life.

According to Wikipedia malware includes computer viruses, worms, trojan horses, most rootkits, spyware, dishonest adware, and other malicious and unwanted software.

“In America, hackers have already broken into the Pentagon’s computer systems; in India, into government ministers’ files; a barrage of spam and hacking paralyzed the former Soviet republic’s banks and government”.

NATO warns that the online terror threat will continue to grow as groups become increasingly aware of its potential. The military alliance says it considers internet terrorism to be a greater threat than a missile strike.

These attacks could be designed to compromise safety systems, critical national infrastructure, to overwhelm communication systems, or even to cause a run on the bank. We don’t only bank and shop online, our governments use the infrastructure of the Net to do their business too.

Even though internet users are facing increased amount of malware problems, they need not plug their life online. But keep anti-virus software up-to-date and know the enemy.

    Dear Asok,

The post had been very informative in its very simple language. Remarkable post from you. Keep it up!!
I never thought about online terrorism and its outcomes. But, I heard that rootkits are too important in the sense of information stealing business. I would be thankful if you post an article related to this.

    Thanks in advance,
    Jith Raj
