I had seen a lot of IT professionals talking about securing information over Internet. They are all concerned about securing information on corporate network. But when it comes to our friends, family and relatives who are responsible for their safety online!

Ya, it’s our responsibility to secure their computers online. Normal people don’t do stuff like configuring networks or virus scan a removable media before actually accessing it. They are not aware of dos and don’ts of regular computing, get over it IT professionals!!! It’s always an IT professional’s job to keep their loved ones safe online. We people should spare some time for them on this, making it a point to - attend their trivial computer related problems over phone, send Fwds emails to them alerting about recent security threads and visiting their homes once in a while to fix their virus ridden computers etc. These seemingly simple helps may prevent occurrence of catastrophic events to your friends, family and relatives.

“It’s a truth that no computer that is been connected to Internet is safe”

Here is a basic but must have list of four things an Internet user should be aware of before going online;

1. Keep your firewall switched on.

2. Keep Operating System up to date.

3. Use updated antivirus software.

4. Use updated antispyware software.

How to do that properly! Ask an IT professional in your area.
